If one really wants to enjoy nature, surrounded by
birds and animals, then Mrigavani National Park is the
right place. It is situated in Chilkur, 25 km. from
Hyderabad which covers an area of 700 acres.
The Forest Department has declared it as a National
Park and is currently administered by it to have a natural
feel and look. This park contains of 600 varieties of
birds, 20 varieties of snakes and other animal habitat.
The more importance to Eco tourism and to protect it
from environmental disasters, a sum of Rs. 7 lakhs has
been granted by the Central Government and a sum of
10 lakhs has been granted by the State government.
Every year from July to February, the Forest Department
conducts around 150 camps, with a minimum of 4 to 5
camps per week. Basically, the main purpose of these
camps is to educate every students about the concepts
of Ecology and Eco-diversity. Every year, for this purpose,
the Forestry Department sends invitations to all the
schools in and around twin cities. The schools select
around 50-60 students for participation in these camps.
The responsibility and needs of the students are well
taken care by the forest officials once they are in
the camp. As an aim to create awareness about the Environment,
the entry to all the students is free. In addition to
that, arrangements have also been made to provide free
like tea, snacks and lunch.
The park harbors over 600 plant species ranging from
bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Climbers, Herbs, Shrubs and
Trees. The vegetative cover presents a mosaic of woodland
and grasslands. Prominent trees are Teak, Rosewood,
Sandalwood, Neem, Bamboo, etc. You can find a large
number of spices such as Sambar, Cheetal, Wild Boar,
Porcupine, Hare, Forest Cat, Civet Cat, Mongoose, Peacocks,
Warblers, Babblers, Flower Peckers, Partridges, Lapwings,
Ducks, Curlews and Quails and more than 20 species of
butterflies and several hundred species of other insects
and worms.
You can also watch the tourist facilities like an Environmental
Education Center with an auditorium, a well-stocked
library and a museum with wildlife exhibits. Snake show
with live specimens is an added attraction also for
tourists. Cottages facilities are also available for
tourists on rent like 'Mayuri' and 'Chakora' who visit
this park in the day time, the entrance fee is Rs. 200.
But the same is not allowed for the student. The accommodation
is free for students and they are allowed to stay whole
night, while they are dropped safely to their respective
places in the early morning.
